Is it just me or has the quality of award shows in general just been crappy lately?
The American Music Awards show was awkward, the GRAMMYs were WAY too long, and the BET Awards were just … no comment.
Being that the VMAs are known for being spontaneous, fun, and filled with amazing performances, I had high hopes for last night’s show. Katy Perry was hosting, you had the hottest stars in music walking the blue carpet, and hitting the stage, so it seemed like an automatic home run as far as award shows go.
Boy was I wrong.
First off the pre-show was horrible. The hosts seemed unprepared, and even scattered at times. Terrence J tried to hold it together the best he could, but it was just in short bad.
Secondly, the audio for the whole show seemed off. It seemed like the performer’s reference tracks or background music was way too loud, and at times it seemed like their mic volume was way too low or maybe their mic’s weren’t on at all. Nevertheless it was horrible. These artists are taking the time to come to and perform for your show, so the least you can do is make sure their audio sounds good, c’mon!
Lastly, what is with the trend of getting non-host to host? Miley Cyrus was awful last year, and Katy Perry was awful last night. Her jokes fell flat, her delivery was flat, and at times it was just awkward.
Award shows have to do better! I remember watching award shows and being excited to see my favorite artists perform and present, and now watch them feels like a let down or waste or time.
I hope they start to improve soon.
