When Janelle Monáe says she wants to last forever, it’s difficult to believe she means sexually. It seems much more likely that the singer is advancing First Lady Michelle Obama’s ‘Let’s Move!’ fitness initiative and referencing her desire to live forever through the healing, strengthening properties of yoga.
At any rate, Monáe still manages to flip the usual objectification conversation on its head with the chorus of her new song “Yoga” by suggesting her baby should bend over and let her see them do that yoga, with the implication being that the baby in question is a man (or perhaps not; after all, Monae’s sexual orientation has been debated before, especially due to the singer’s ambiguous answers on the subject).
Men are absent figures in the video however, which places a focus on the bonds of female friendship while Monáe and a slew of women dance together and generally cut loose. Crop tops and workout clothes abound, but it somehow all manages to stay quite innocent.
