Jay-Z Sends Message To Cuba Critics And Obama With ‘Open Letter’

Jay-Z attempts to shut down critics with a new song called “Open Letter.” With thorny lyrics aimed in all directions, he flaunts his recent trip to Cuba; he taunts the powers that be over his Brooklyn Nets payday; and drops advice to President Barack Obama.

In the immediate days after Jay-Z’s Cuba excursion (with Beyoncé on the five-year anniversary of their wedding), Jay was silent in the face of official inquiries and criticism from unexpected sources. But with his new song, he flies into the fire.

“I done turned Havana to Atlanta,” he raps,”…I’m in Cuba, I love Cubans/ This Communist talk is so confusing…”

He delves deeper into the subject when he apparently addresses the Florida politicians–Senators Marco Rubio, Mario Diaz Balart, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen–who called for an official inquiries into his trip to Cuba, a country that U.S. has made off-limits for liesure travel as part of a longstanding embargo.

“Boy from the hood but got White House clearance/ Sorry y’all, I don’t agree with y’all appearance/ Politicians never did s*** for me/ Except lie to me/ distort history/Wanna give me jail time and a fine/Fine, let me commit a real crime…”

While he leans into politicians with “Open Letter,” he offers some insight into his odd couple relationship with President Obama, for whom he and Beyoncé famously held a $40,000 per plate fundraiser.
