Collaborations are always an essential part of music every year. Throughout the years, we’ve seen memorable collaborations from Aerosmith and Run DMCBrandy and Monica, Beyonce and Jay Z, and Justin Bieber and Ludacris. This year was no different.

Like I said with my other lists, these are MY  Top 10 collabs  of 2012, not 102 JAMZ’, and not YOUR list. As with the other list, feel free to tell me your top collabs in the comments or on Twitter @itsMeanJean!

10. “Good Time” — Owl City & Carle Rae Jepsen

Anytime I hear this song it makes me want to jump up and down like a jackass. It could have easily made my Top 10 Catchiest Song list, but it didn’t, and it starts this countdown off with a very cool feel good song.

9. “Birthday Cake” (remix) — Rihanna (ft. Chris Brown)

The remix that Def Jam, Rihanna’s label, never wanted you to hear. When news broke that Rihanna and C Breezy were jumping on each others track I think it broke the Internet, for obvious reasons. Now Rih-Rih and Breezy are back together and have our ninth best collaboration of 2012.

8. “Wild Ones” — Flo Rida (ft. Sia)

Sia blasted onto the American music scene after being featured on David Guetta’s 2011 Nothing But the Beat album, and has so far done great things as a collaborator. We’ll see what happens if and when she releases solo material. This song showcases why Flo Rida is an international superstar and why Sia is on the rise. The song was also nominated for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at February’s GRAMMY Awards.

7. “As Long As You Love Me” — Justin Bieber (ft. Big Sean)

Biebs definitely took some steps in the right direction with this new album, as he was able to widen his fan base and was able to do so by collaborating with some of the biggest names in Hip Hop from Drake to Nicki Minaj to Ludacris (again), and of course Big Sean on this one. Great way to gain some credibility with the adult crowd, as this was another song that a lot of people were upset that they liked after they found out it was by JB.

6. “F****n Problems” — A$AP Rocky (ft. Drake, 2 Chainz, & Kendrick Lamar)

Even though this is a newer song, this was my selection for club banger of the year. Any song that salutes bad “women,” and hits hard in the clubs, is always a hit. I’m sure this one came together during Drake’s Club Paradise tour where the other three artists served as Drizzy’s opening acts. The track is a lot of fun, and I’m sure it was a blast recording it.

5. “Mercy” — G.O.O.D. Music (Big Sean, Pu$ha T., Kanye West, & 2 Chainz)

The first single from the highly anticipated Kanye West Presents Cruel Summer album, this song was assumed to be the introduction of 2 Chainz to the “clique” (more on that later) and it surely didn’t disappoint, even though the album was slightly underwhelming. Even Chainz delivered what I thought was his best verse of 2012.

4. “We Are Young” — fun. (ft. Janelle Monet)

This song came out of nowhere and took over everyone’s radios, brains, and hearts. Janelle Monet has been around for quite some time and I legitimately think this  song led to the indie wave that hit over the summer. It doesn’t seem to be going anywhere for quite some time.

3. “Payphone” — Maroon 5 (ft. Wiz Khalifa)

When I first heard that Maroon 5 was releasing a song with Wiz Khalifa I was both shocked and intrigued (AT THE SAME DAMN TIME). The combination sounded so out of left field that I didn’t know how it would sound. Then I tuned into The Voice, like I  do every Monday night, and was pleasantly surprised: 1. because I liked the song and 2. because I don’t usually like songs until I hear the studio version of them. Either way, they wound up with a smash single which is nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at February’s GRAMMY Awards.

2. “Take Care” — Drake (ft. Rihanna)

I had to check the date on this one, because Drake’s Take Care album was released in November of 2011, but this wasn’t officially released as a single until March. Therefore, it deserved a spot on this list. The song killed on all formats of radio all year, and as someone who doesn’t consider themselves a Drake fan, this is certainly one that I jammed to. I can’t even hide it.

AND NOW for my #1 Collab of the Year: Drum Roll PLEASE:

1. “Clique” — Big Sean (ft. Jay Z & Kanye West)

In my opinion you can never go wrong with Jay Z – Kanye West when it comes to collaborations. You throw Big Sean into the mix and you’ve got a winner. It’s no secret that Kanye is my favorite artist but there was no bias in him having two songs in the Top 10, let alone Top 5.

So there you have it, my Top 10 collabs of 2012. Did I miss some? Were they out of order? As with all of my lists I’ve posted feel free to comment or tweet me @itsMeanJean and tell me how good (or great) I did with the list.

Thanks for reading!
