Lupe Fiasco is ready to walk away from hip-hop. And the outspoken MC points to an unsettling threat made by up-and-coming star Chief Keef and the current skyrocketing murder rate in his Chicago hometown as signs for him to throw down the mic.

In a series of tweets a wary Lupe explained his discontent.

One aspect of Lupe’s impending self-exile from hip-hop has been the controversial emergence of Chief Keef, who scored a deal with Interscope after Kanye West remixed his sneering ‘hood anthem “I Don’t Like.” In a recent interview, Lupe said he was scared of what Chief represents and the violent culture surrounding Chicago’s youth. Chief responded, dissing Lupe via Twitter and threatening to “smack” him when he sees him. (Keef later said his Twitter account was hacked.)

“Lupe Fiasco is a h– a– n—-. And when I see him I’ma smack him like da lil b—- he is,” the tweet read. A Twitter back-and-forth ensued, which ended with Lupe sounding weary and threatening to give up rap.

The gang affiliated Keef is currently being investigated by police for taunting the shooting death of former rival JoJo, also via tweets.

This is not Lupe Fiasco’s first time publicly hinting at his retirement. In 2008, he spoke of leaving the music industry after his Food & Liquor debut. —Keith Murphy, CBS Local
