“Lights” singer Ellie Goulding is taking cues from fellow hit makers Justin Bieber and Drake on her upcoming album Halcyon, due out October 9.

“…if you read the lyrics [of “Lights”], it’s quite depressing, but the album itself ended up sounding quite happy,” she said. “My next album isn’t like that. There will be some tunes that you can really dance to and then others that are really sad.”

Justin Bieber And Drake Influence Ellie Goulding’s Indie Electropop

The British songstress, who performed at the Royal Wedding last year, recently told 97.1 AMP/Los Angeles that the “Boyfriend” and “Take Care” singers are among her favorite American artists.

NME report that she has been in the studio with dubstep producer boyfriend Skrillex and house trio Swedish House Mafia to work on the album, although Goulding wrote and co-produced every track herself. A light dance album, in the style of Bieber or Drake, may sound like a good time, but Goulding says the album will actually be darker than her double-platinum 2010 debut, Lights.

R&B powerhouses Beyoncé and Lauryn Hill also provided early inspiration to Goulding, who would sing along to their hits on the radio, but she revealed that left-of-center singer-songwriters like Björk and Imogen Heap have also inspired her unique sound over her career.

“I found a whole new world of music and female singers and performers and artists,” said Goulding.

Goulding Tweeted at fans today to keep an eye out for a sneak peek at Halcyon in the coming days.

The video for the Halcyon’s lead single, “Anything Could Happen,” will premiere on August 13. The singer released a collaboration with Tinie Tempah, in which the two covered indie act Active Child’s song “Hanging On,” earlier this July.
