Monica and Brandy teamed up yesterday (March 22) for an intimate show and conversation in Atlanta, sponsored by CBS Local’s V-103. By the time the near two-hours of conversation and live-streamed performance was over, it had all obviously become too much for Brandy, who was moved to tears after the emotionally draining show.

Brandy’s day started with rehearsals and then she and Monica appeared on The Ryan Cameron show. The R&B stalwarts, who recently teamed up for “It Belongs to Me,” explained why the show was special to them.

“I’ve always had great shows here in Atlanta so I know tonight is going to be special,” Brandy told Cameron.

Monica, an Atlanta native, echoed Brandy’s sentiments. “I’m so happy to be home in the city that raised me, that supports me, that holds me down.”

They were on the air when the official word from the L.A. coroner broke that “her greatest influence of all time” – Whitney Houston – had died of an accidental drowning; complicated by heart disease and cocaine use.

When the news was announced, Brandy couldn’t take her welling eyes off the in-studio television screen.

At the start of the private “Conversation/Soul Session”  which was streamed live from Atlanta’s W Hotel Midtown, she encouraged everyone to come to the front of the stage as she charged through “Full Moon,” “Almost Doesn’t Count,” a few bars of the Houston signature, “I Will Always Love You,” and during her talk with new V-103/Atlanta midday personality Egypt.

But then after Monica had her individual performance and Q&A – and the two sang their two hits together (current single “It All Belongs To Me” and for the second time EVER, live, “The Boy Is Mine”) – Monica began an a capella encore of Houston’s “You Give Good Love.”

While a star-studded audience (T.I., Tiny, Kandi Burruss, Toya Wright, Polow Da Don, Jacob Lattimore, Demtria McKinney, Jazze Pha) stood on chairs and sang along, Brandy stood steps back, silent. Tears welling in her eyes, again.
