The shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teen from Sanford shot to death by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman (who was not arrested for the shooting under Florida’s ‘Stand Your Ground’ law) on February 26th, will now be headed to the Seminole County Grand Jury on April 10th.  And it was plenty of big names, including Wyclef Jean, Spike Lee, and Janelle Monae, that helped raise nationwide awareness of the incident in seeking justice for Martin’s death.

A petition on Change.org, started by Trayvon’s parents Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, called on Florida District Attorney Norman Wolfinger to bring charges against Zimmerman.  And thanks to the celebrities who hopped on board, and the increased media attention brought to the case, the grand jury investigation will now take place.

This morning, Wolfinger said in a statement:

I share in the desire of the family and the community to accurately collect and evaluate all the facts surrounding the tragic death of Trayvon Martin. The public is entitled to no less than a thorough, deliberate, and just review of the facts. We intend to honor that commitment.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Take a look at some of the celebrity social media that helped raise awareness.
