The 25th SXSW Music is bringing together acts from throughout its history, and whilst the conference is renowned for guitar-based music, there are also some hip hop heavyweights descending on Austin this year.

Two of these are Wu-Tang Clan and Wiz Khalifa, a legendary act and an up-and-coming artist. Last.fm Trends is looking into their scrobbles to see if listeners are finding strength in numbers…

wiztrend Last.fm Trends: A Rap Battle At SXSWWiz Khalifa has gained 10,041,947 plays from 712,211 listeners so far, since releasing his first album in 2006. The following year’s “Say Yeah” is still his biggest hit with 955,630 plays from 376,609 listeners, but it’s since 2010 and creative freedom that his star has really been rising: “Black and Yellow” reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100, and its Recent Listening Trend should be a good indication of what’s in store for major label debut Rolling Papers out in two weeks’ time.

wutangtrend Last.fm Trends: A Rap Battle At SXSWWu-Tang Clan meanwhile has 18,547,400 plays from 792,078 listeners. Their most popular track is “C.R.E.A.M.” from 1993’s debut album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). Its Recent Listening Trend, in common with most of their tracks, is steady, but it seems their era-defining work in the 90s won’t be overshadowed by any subsequent releases.

Whilst Wiz may soon outstrip the Wu in terms of scrobbles as he gains in popularity, he will have to work hard to get fans as loyal: the average Wu-Tang listener has listened 23 times, compared to 14 times for Khalifa.
