Have you ever listened to an album and drifted to another place? Well that’s what happened to me when I zoned out to Kanye West’s “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.” It’s crazy because when people ask me my thoughts on the album in regard to a recent album release, its hard to categorize Ye in the same category (as a general album release). He is a genius – yes, impactful – yes but his work… is a conversation piece.
Opening up with a British-voiced Nicki Minaj, he sets up an opera-like tone and/or plot for the album; which each song flowed into one another and extended with word-less instrumentals (similar to his prior album). The tracks heard on the radio deserve to be there, have it be in rotation or sampled within a mixshow; Runaway, Monster, Power & All of the Lights (my personal fav!). They are catchy and work with a direct message that listeners can relate to in one way or another.
However, Ye would not be the man we have grown to love without taking shots and perhaps making some nameless individual cry or public figure for that matter and he does it so eloquently with “Blame Game” . On the record he goes back and forth, hence the title blame game (typical he said, she said premise) but the jabs he takes are hilarious. And the banter is solidified with a outro skit by comedian Chris Rock, where he goes in about making, molding and “re-upholstering” this chic (who I think is Amber Rose…)
